彭博:成績普普 不如當水電工 Mayor Bloomberg: Skip College And Become A Plumber

Mayor Bloomberg: Skip College And Become A Plumber

New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg told “so-so” high school students to skip college on his weekly radio show Friday. The soda-banning, salt-busting, cigarette-stomping mayor said kids who don’t perform at the top of their class are better off at trade school than going after an undergraduate degree.
“The people who are going to have the biggest problem are college graduates who aren’t rocket scientists, if you will, not at the top of their class,” he said.
“Compare a plumber to going to Harvard College - being a plumber, actually for the average person, probably would be a better deal.”
The mayor’s reasoning is that workers saddled with student loan debt face an even steeper uphill battle when they finish school. Plumbers, he said, make a good living without having to pay off student loans.
“You don’t spend ... four years spending $40,000, $50,000 in tuition without earning income,” he explained.
The mayor said plumbers don’t have to worry about being outsourced or replaced with computers. “It’s hard to farm that out ... and it’s hard to automate that,” he said.
He cited a “number” of studies that allegedly showed plumbers begin their careers with less debt and higher wages than kids out of college.
College financial planning expert Mark Kantrowitz told the Daily News that the mayor’s logic is not far off base. While he said college is a good investment “not everyone has to go to get a college degree to get a good job.”
As of April, the unemployment rate in the U.S. is 7.5 percent.
He added “The only schools that cost $40,000 or $50,000 like the mayor said are elite schools.”
Bloomberg is famous for a number of “progressive” public health measures in the New York City, including expanding the smoking ban in every commercial establishment and even city parks. He banned trans-fat in city restaurants and made calorie counts on foods at chain stores be posted. He also advocates low-salt diets.
According to the Project of Student Debt, the average college student is $26,600 in debt.

Gambier, Ohio — New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg emphasized three characteristics that young adults need to succeed in life — courage, curiosity, and hard work. He made his remarks in a commencement address Saturday at Kenyon College, during which he referenced the shootings in Chardon 15 months ago.
Bloomberg told the 410 graduates on the Knox County campus to “Have courage to act on your hopes. Don’t be paralyzed by your fears. Have the courage to think for yourself and to believe in your idea.
“That kind of courage is at the heart of human invention and progress — and the lack of it lies at the heart of our political problems today,” he said.
“Last year, about 125 miles northeast of this campus, a 17-year-old student opened fire in his high school cafeteria, killing three people and seriously wounding others,” Bloomberg said in a quick reference to when T.J. Lane shot students at Chardon High School.
The three-term mayor then ran off 13 other places in the country where mass shootings occurred after that, punctuating the list with Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Connecticut, where 20 children and six teachers were killed in a shooting last December.
Finally, Bloomberg said, President Obama and some congressional leaders decided something had to be done.
The mayor was outspoken in his support of their plan that would have required background checks before gun purchases. He said in the speech Saturday that the proposal was backed by 90 percent of Americans and 80 percent of the gun owners. Yet the measure failed in Congress.
The reason for the defeat, Bloomberg said, was lack of courage.
“Many of them feared that voting for a common sense policy would lead to someone challenging them in a party primary or hurt their chances to win their party’s nomination to higher office,” he said.
“I’m saying: Take risks — and take charge. Don’t let others decide your future for you. And don’t wait for opportunity to knock.
“A former Kenyon student — the comic genius Jonathan Winters, who died last month — once said: ‘If your ship doesn’t come in, swim out to meet it’.”
Bloomberg said the current generation of young adults is starting to reshape society in fundamental ways. For instance, he said, the voices of young people played a crucial role in passing a law in New York that legalized same-sex marriage. And, Bloomberg said, he anticipates young adults in Ohio will eventually help abolish a state constitutional amendment that bans same-sex marriage.
Bloomberg told the graduates that their capacity to learn is the greatest asset they have.
“Never give it up and never sell it short,“ he said. “Don’t ever be afraid to ask a question. The most powerful word in the English language is ‘Why’.”
He said the world is full of people who have stopped learning, and whose favorite word is “No.”
“Don’t listen to them, don’t be deterred by them, and don’t become one of them. Not if you want to fulfill your potential, and not if you want to change the world for the better,” he said.
“The future of the country is in your hands,“ Bloomberg said. “We are counting on you.“
Bloomberg, a graduate of Johns Hopkins University and Harvard Business School, apparently did his homework. His address was sprinkled with many inside references that reverberated with the students, including a joke about Gambier’s notorious shortage of parking.
He listed a host of things he had wanted to do before commencement, but “I spent the whole morning looking for parking,” he said.
New York City’s 108th mayor received an honorary doctor of laws degree at the ceremony.
“Your early success as an investment banker led to still greater success as a purveyor of that most valuable quantity, expert information, to the financial industry,” Kenyon Provost Nayef H. Samhat told him.
Six others received honorary degrees, including a doctor of humane letters degree for Gary Knell, president and chief executive of National Public Radio.
Kenyon College President S. Georgia Nugent also received an honorary doctor of humane letters degree for her scholarship on classical poetry and tragedy, and for her service to higher education in general and to Kenyon College in particular. She is the 18th president of the school that was founded in 1824.
Three years ago, Forbes Magazine listed Kenyon one of the 13 most beautiful college campuses in the world.
It is nestled among rolling hills dotted with prosperous farms and other forms of agri-business, the economic engine that drives Knox County.
The parking lots on Saturday were filled with cars from all over the United States, a testament to the college’s status as a destination school. Mark Ellis, a Kenyon spokesman, said only 14 percent of the 1,600-member student body are from Ohio. Others are from across the country and 44 other nations, he said.

Loeb, whose Third Point LLC hedge fund just took a $1.1 billion stake in Sony, is pushing the Tokyo-based company to sell as much as 20 percent of its entertainment business and focus on the “considerable and underappreciated value” of its electronics unit. After Loeb’s proposal sparked the biggest rally in Sony shares in more than four years, the $21 billion company still languishes at a cheaper valuation relative to profit than 90 percent of similar-sized consumer electronics makers, according to data compiled by Bloomberg yesterday.
Loeb is approaching Sony after shareholders lost more than $100 billion in market value since 2000. CLSA Asia-Pacific Markets said Sony would be worth 28 percent more in a separation. While estimates from Macquarie Group Ltd.’s Damian Thong fall short of Loeb’s targeted 60 percent stock gain, the analyst said the activist’s claim that spinning off the entertainment unit and boosting its profitability may raise the company’s market value by about 30 percent “seems reasonable.”
“Sony is a chronic underperformer,” Joshua Strauss, Chicago-based co-manager of the Appleseed Fund at Pekin Singer Strauss Asset Management Inc., which oversees about $1 billion, including investments in Japan and Korea, said in a telephone interview. “Should they spin off the entertainment division? Would it create shareholder value? Probably. When you do that sort of thing, the sum of the parts is greater than the whole.”

Entertainment IPO

Loeb said in a May 14 letter to Sony Chief Executive OfficerKazuo Hirai that the company should sell as much as 20 percent of Sony Entertainment in an initial public offering, giving current Sony shareholders priority in owning the shares and reducing leverage for the electronics business.
“As President and CEO Kazuo Hirai has said repeatedly, the entertainment businesses are important contributors to Sony’s growth and are not for sale,” Sony said in an e-mailed statement May 14.
Independently listed, the entertainment business -- featuring artists including Bruce Springsteen and the top-grossing U.S. film studio -- could improve its margins and boost earnings as much as 50 percent, wrote Loeb, whose firm owns about 64 million Sony shares. Loeb said that could add 625 billion yen ($6.1 billion) to Sony’s market value, or 540 yen per share -- an amount that Thong, a Tokyo-based analyst at Macquarie, said in a phone interview “seems reasonable.”
Sony shares, which rose 10 percent yesterday, gained another 0.5 percent to 2,082 yen in Tokyo today. The stock closed at 1,877 yen on May 14 before Loeb’s letter was disclosed.

Walkman Players

In addition, Loeb said Sony should focus on streamlining its electronics offerings as that unit is poised to return to profitability. Sony makes consumer electronics such as the PlayStation game console and Xperia smartphones.
“The value realization within the entertainment business was always secondary to the turnaround in the electronics business,” Thong said in a phone interview. “What this has done is shine a search beam right on a part of the business that should be valued more.”
Founded in 1946, Sony was emblematic of Japan’s post-World War II rise, inventing the Trinitron cathode-ray tube TV in the 1960s and the Walkman portable music player a decade later. Its market value, which topped $120 billion in 2000, has since plunged as consumers shifted to flat-panel TVs, smartphones and mobile devices made by Samsung Electronics Co. of South Korea and Cupertino, California-based Apple Inc. (AAPL)

Depressed Value

While a weaker yen, box-office successes like “Skyfall” and the sale of its New Yorkheadquarters helped return Sony to its first profit in five years, the company’s valuation has still lagged behind its historical highs and its peers.
Sony trades at a 5 percent discount to the value of its net assets, compared with an average price-book ratio of about 2.8 for consumer electronics makers with market capitalizations exceeding $1 billion, according to data compiled by Bloomberg.
Sony’s enterprise value of 2.2 trillion yen is 4.2 times the average of analysts’ estimates for earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation and amortization this year, the data show. The company’s peers trade at an average of about 8.9 times.
The value of Sony’s entertainment division -- which makes the “Spider-Man” movies through itsCulver City, California-based Sony Pictures and also represents music artists including Grammy winner Adele -- isn’t being realized in the company’s current structure, said Michael Souers, an equity analyst at Standard & Poor’s.

Breakup Analysis

“It’s totally being weighed down by the struggling consumer electronics unit and the fact that it’s had to subsidize that unit,” Souers said in a phone interview from New York. A partial spinoff “would make sense for them. And from a managerial perspective, they could focus a little bit more on turning around the electronics business.”
A sum-of-the-parts analysis by Christian Dinwoodie, a Tokyo-based analyst at CLSA, values Sony at 2,400 yen a share, 28 percent higher than its price May 14, before Loeb’s proposal lifted the stock. Spinning off part of the entertainment business would give Sony an infusion of capital and allow it to transfer some debt to the new entity, Dinwoodie wrote in a May 14 report.
Sony has pursued a similar approach before. It raised 320 billion yen in 2007 when it spun off its financial services unit in an IPO. Sony still owns 60 percent of the banking and insurance business, known as Sony Financial Holdings Inc. (8729)

Activist Failures

Still, Loeb’s push faces hurdles in a culture that traditionally hasn’t been welcoming to overseas activist investors, said Strauss of Pekin Singer Strauss.
In the early 1990s, oilman T. Boone Pickens failed to win a board seat at auto parts dealer Koito Manufacturing Co. (7276) Last month, Seibu Holdings Inc. said it won’t offer any concessions to New York-based private-equity firm Cerberus Capital Management LP, the hotel and rail operator’s biggest investor, in its push for board seats and a bigger stake.
“The Japanese don’t care,” Strauss said. “They’re not beholden to shareholders in that country. Some guy in New York is not going to convince Japanese companies to change their way of doing things.”
Loeb’s plans for Sony are designed to maximize his own returns at the possible expense of the company’s long-term viability, said Amir Anvarzadeh, a Singapore-based manager for Japanese equity sales at BGC Partners Inc. Without the cash flow of the entertainment business, Sony’s consumer electronics will struggle, he said.

‘Quick Buck’

“In Japan, activist investors have never been successful - - it’s not the type of capitalism that Japan likes,” Anvarzadeh said in a phone interview. “This guy doesn’t care about Sony. He just wants to make a quick buck.”
Still, Nobuo Sayama, a partner at Tokyo-based private-equity firm Integral Corp., said the return of activist investors to Japan is a positive development.
Loeb’s interest “is something Sony or Japan as a whole should welcome,” he said in a phone interview. “The industry should be grateful for such proposals from investors at home or abroad.”
Sony shareholders have nothing to lose should the company meet Loeb’s demands, said Thong, the Macquarie analyst. Even after selling 20 percent of the entertainment business in an IPO, Sony would retain control and bank any profits, he said.
“It’s primarily a way of making transparent a part of the business which is relatively untransparent,” Thong said. “Everyone’s excited not just in the context of Sony but of corporate activism accelerating change in Japanese firms or the Japanese economy in general. This provides additional reasons to believe that change is in the air.”

GlobalFoundries Tips 10nm Process

GlobalFoundries Tips 10nm Process
Foundry rolls FD-SOI, super-steep technology
Raising the ante in the foundry business, GlobalFoundries has added a 10nm finFET process to its roadmap and expanded its substrate offerings.
The foundry vendor plans to move into production with its 10nm finFET process in 2015, a year after its recently introduced 14nm finFET technology. In addition, the foundry vendor has also expanded its substrate offerings to five technologies: bulk planar, super-steep retrograde well (SSRW), fully depleted silicon-on-insulator (minimum), fully depleted silicon-on-insulator (maximum) and finFET.
Perhaps the biggest surprise on the roadmap is SSRW, a technology that controls short-channel effects using a doping technique. For SSRW, GlobalFoundries has been talking to SuVolta about the technology, according to multiple sources, but it’s unclear if the companies  have reached a deal.
Ajit Manocha, chief executive of GlobalFoundries, disclosed the company’s new roadmap during a keynote presentation at the 2012 IEEE International Electron Devices Meeting (IEDM) in San Francisco on Tuesday. During the keynote, Manocha also addressed GlobalFoundries’ capacity plans, 450mm fabs and EUV.  In fact, GlobalFoundries is not counting on EUV for the 10nm node.
His keynote was entitled, “Is the Fabless/Foundry Model Dead? We Don’t Think So. Long Live Foundry 2.0!” During the keynote, Manocha said the fabless/foundry model is alive and well in spite of recent comments from an undisclosed party.  “Somebody said the foundry business is dead,” he said. “The same company wants to get into the foundry business. Something doesn’t add up.”
The comments may have been directed towards Intel. In a recent interview with SemiMD, Mark Bohr, senior fellow at Intel, said: “The traditional foundry model is running into problems. In order to survive, the foundries will have to become more like an integrated device manufacturer. Even some of the chief spokespeople for the foundries have said something similar. The foundry model worked well when traditional scaling was being followed and everybody knew where we were headed. In this era, where you continually have to invent new materials and new structures, it’s a lot tougher being a separate foundry and maskless design house. Being an IDM, we have design and process development under one roof. That’s really a significant advantage.”
At IEDM, Manocha agreed the foundries must act more like IDMs or virtual IDMs, saying the old model simply doesn’t work. “The traditional foundry model is that you work in isolation,” he said. “It doesn’t work.”
In the new model, dubbed Foundry 2.0, there is a deeper and earlier collaboration between foundries and their customers, he said. GlobalFoundries refers to its strategy as a “collaborative device manufacturer.”
As part of its strategy, GlobalFoundries continues to expand and accelerate its foundry offerings.  Within its new 300mm fab in New York, the company has begun ramping the plant for 28nm and 20nm technology.
In 2013, the New York fab will be capable of running 30,000 wafers a month. At some point, the fab will capable of running 50,000 wafers a month.
Meanwhile, in September, GlobalFoundries rolled out its finFET technology for the 14nm node. GlobalFoundries is taking a “modular fin” approach with its bulk finFET offering, dubbed 14nm-XM. The 14nm-XM combines a 14nm-class fin with its 20nm back-end-of-line (BEOL) interconnect flow.
By taking the modular approach, the company has accelerated its process roadmap by a year. Early process design kits (PDKs) are available, with customer product tape-outs expected in 2013. Production, which is slated for 2014, will take place within GlobalFoundries’ new 300mm fab in New York.
Then, in October, rival Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co. Ltd. (TSMC) updated and accelerated its process roadmap. The world’s largest silicon foundry has accelerated its 16nm finFET efforts by one quarter and added a 10nm finFET technology to the roadmap. TSMC’s 10nm finFET process, dubbed CLN10FF, is expected to move into risk production close to the end of 2015.
GlobalFoundries moved to keep pace with TSMC. At IEDM, GlobalFoundries disclosed a 10nm finFET process, which is due out in 2015, or a year after 14nm finFET.  “We have accelerated (the 10nm finFET process),” Manocha said after his keynote at IEDM.
At 10nm, GlobalFoundries and others may be forced to extend 193nm immersion, while also going with a multiple patterning scheme. EUV is late to the party and may miss the 10nm node. “10nm will be optical,” he said. “We have evidence that we can do 7nm with immersion.”
GlobalFoundries did not describe the details of its 10nm process. The foundry vendor did disclose it would offer several new technology platforms.
Besides planar bulk and finFETs, the company is moving to offer FD-SOI.  In July, GlobalFoundries agreed to manufacture STMicroelectronics’ FD-SOI technology in both the 28nm and 20nm nodes. The SOI substrates are supplied by Soitec.
As part of its technology offerings, GlobalFoundries plans to offer two versions of FD-SOI: minimum and maximum. The maximum version is a technology tuned for a specific application. IBM and STMicroelectronics are examples of companies that would utilize maximum versions of FD-SOI.
The minimum version is a simple and an “out of the box” FD-SOI technology, said Subramani Kengeri, head of advanced technology architecture at GlobalFoundries.
In addition, GlobalFoundries also plans to offer SSWR, a doping technology. “You add a ground plane below the channel,”  Kengeri said. The technology is a 20nm planar process at 28nm costs. For years, several companies have been working on the technology to solve a major issue. A phenomenon called random dopant fluctuation (RDF) causes more than 70% of all random variations at 65nm and the problems are getting worse at each node.
To solve RDF and other problems, one company, SuVolta, recently rolled out a new transistor option that extends conventional bulk CMOS technology. SuVolta’s Deeply Depleted Channel (DDC) technology works by forming a deeply depleted channel when a voltage is applied to the gate.
In the distant future, GlobalFoundries is also looking at 450mm. It is part of the recently-announced Global 450 Consortium. The G450C group includes five IC manufacturers, with IBM and GlobalFoundries joining the original “International Sematech” members, Intel, Samsung, and TSMC. Those companies, along with Sematech and the SUNY-Albany College of Nanoscale Science and Engineering (CNSE), will sit on the board of directors that will govern the consortium.
The G450C demonstration line in Albany is targeted for 14nm design rules in early 2013. “Do I want to be the first one (on 450mm)? No. Do I want to be the last? No. I would like to be behind the first,” Manocha added.

Apple's rumored chip switch from Samsung to TSMC may send shockwaves through industry

Concerns are already arising in the semiconductor industry about Apple's potential switch from Samsung to TSMC for production of iPhone and iPad processors.
Supply chain sources indicated to DigiTimes that it is expected Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company will begin producing chips for Apple in 2013. The publication has a hit-or-miss track record reporting Apple's future plans, but is known for having sources in the Asian component making market.

In Wednesday's latest report, industry observers indicated that demand for chips from Apple is expected to be massive, with nearly 200 million CPUs for the iPhone and iPad needed every year.

Those orders are expected to require TSMC to need at least 200,000 12-inch wafers to meet demand from Apple. It's also reportedly caused concern among TSMC's current customers who are afraid they could be squeezed out if Apple takes up the bulk of TSMC's orders.

"TSMC's advanced process offerings serve the world's major fabless IC firms including Altera, Qualcomm and Nvidia," the report said. "While being capable of providing sufficient capacity to Apple, TSMC also does not want to upset its existing major clients, the observers noted. Allocating efficiently its production capacity will be a focus for the foundry in 2013, the observers believe."

Chips

Morris Chang, chairman and CEO of TSMC, recently indicated it could make sense for his company to dedicate as many as two entire fabrication plants to one company in order to supply enough chips. Some industry watchers interpreted those comments as a sign of a possible deal with Apple.

Rumors of a chipmaking deal between Apple and TSMC have persisted for some time, but Samsung remains the sole supplier of custom ARM-based processors for the iPhone, iPad, iPod touch and Apple TV. However, a growing rift between Samsung and Apple — two companies that fiercely compete in numerous markets — has increased chatter suggesting Apple plans to move its chip production away from Samsung.

One rumor out of Taiwan last month claimed Apple's future iOS devices could be powered by custom chips from TSMC as soon as late 2013. It was suggested that those processors could be quad-core chips based on a 20-nanometer manufacturing process.

Another rumor that surfaced in August claimed that Apple made an offer for around $1 billion that would have made TSMC a dedicated chip producer to Apple alone. The offer was allegedly rejected by TSMC, as the company was said to be interested in staying involved in the booming broader smartphone market.

AMD quietly confirms 28nm Kabini, Temash chips are being built at TSMC

Fourteen months ago, we broke the news that AMD had canceled two of its 28nm APUs that were being built at GlobalFoundries and would instead bring new follow-up designs to market by partnering with TSMC. The company confirmed that it had canceled Krishna and Wichita at its Analyst Day in February 2012, but remained mum when asked where the replacement parts would be manufactured.
The company has stayed quiet on this point, even after paying GlobalFoundries hundreds of millions of dollars for the right to manufacture 28nm products at TSMC and publicly targeting a 1H 2013 ship date for its new Brazos replacement. At CES last week, the company privately let slip that yes, Kabini and Temash are being built at TSMC, with the former expected to ship in Q2 of this year.
AMD roadmap 2013
Here’s the new roadmap — there have been some changes since we last looked at things. Temash has been pulled forward and is now shown as shipping alongside Kabini. That’s AMD’s second tablet SoC; it’ll go up against the next-generation quad-core Atom as well as chips from Qualcomm, Nvidia, and Samsung’s big.LITTLE Exynos Octa.
Kabini will take over AMD’s A4 and A6 brands, which confirms our suspicion that the new chip is strong enough to close the gap with mainstream notebooks. Before now, the gap between netbook-class solutions and full notebooks has been significant — even Brazos, which was 20-25% faster than Atom, wasn’t powerful enough to qualify as a real notebook processor.
So why has AMD played this so coy? Our best guess is that the company is trying to stay on good terms with GlobalFoundries, which can’t be thrilled that its missed out on much of the business AMD was originally supposed to send its way. Under the original terms of the agreement between AMD and GF, Sunnyvale would have moved all its manufacturing to its foundry spin-off by 28nm, including CPUs and GPUs. Obviously that hasn’t happened, but AMD’s long-term commitment to shifting its production to GF is unchanged. The $1B+ that it paid GF in fees and penalties this year (not to mention the ownership stake it gave up) only secured temporary exceptions to the original agreement.
As for Kaveri dropping in the latter half of the year, I’m still dubious. If our sources are accurate, Kaveri couldn’t have taped out before the tail end of 2012. Bringing the chip to market by Q4 of 2013 implies a very fast ramp. We’re not holding our breath, but it’d be great if AMD could bring Kaveri out before Broadwell drops in 2014.
